PROLOGUE
NARRATOR
Long, long ago, before the world was old,
when fairy stories were told every night,
and dragons flames were frightening to behold,
there lived a boy, destined to be a knight.
This boy was gentle, faithful, true, and kind.
He heard that people feared a dreadful scourge.
He wished for love to reign; for all to find
the peace of God. This youngster’s name was George.
GEORGE enters.
As George grew up, he proved that he was brave
and all who knew him saw that he was good.
Mounting his horse he gave them all a wave
He waves to the audience.
and set out to defeat fear and falsehood.
George, setting out “unto the breach”, will fight
and earn his name, Saint George, the Red Cross Knight.
Music changes.
GEORGE looks around.
SCENE ONE
GEORGE
How strange this land I find myself in now.
There are no workers in the fields and, see!
There are no leaves upon the trees. What, how?
The ground is black and warm under my feet.
DRAGON (off)
SCREEEEEEEECCHHHH.
GEORGE
I hear, afar, the cause of all this strife.
And see, aclose, a maiden beauty bright.
The PRINCESS enters.
NARRATOR
The brave knight saw a huge metal gate opening and a beautiful maiden walking solemnly alone. The gate closed behind her with a mighty clang.
Clang sound effect.
GEORGE
O lady! Ho! Dear lady! She can’t hear.
My Lady! Lady! What! Do you have ears!
PRINCESS
I hear you, knight. But I won’t answer you.
Please flee this treacherous place.
GEORGE
I will not flee!
There is a distressed damsel who needs me!
PRINCESS
Damsel I am, but distressed I am not.
